Abbeyfield Kingston

A new EMI Unit with 36 en suite bedrooms for the Abbeyfield Society in Kingston was completed by John Bodley-Scott whilst employed at Tuke Manton Architects in 1997. The design of the new facility was conceived as a "house" with four separate groups of nine residents living as family units with shared facilities and therapy spaces.

The plan was developed to include wandering spaces to encourage residents to wander freely through the ground and first floor accommodation.

Vernacular forms and traditional materials were used in the design to evoke the feeling of "home" for the residents, many of whom are in the later stages of dementia.
